A slight extension on the idea of a two note slur, the four note slur is designed to hit a natural climax in on the 3rd note / beat.

This enables a clear and clean melodic line to be heard.

Notice how the slur is underneath the notes. For the most part, we will always see slurs joining note heads, not the tails.

The only time this will not occur is when there is a longer passage of music that utilises a wider range of pitch.

This means that some notes will have their tails up, others will have their tails down. To cover all the notes, the slur is usually placed above these notes.

When playing this song

  1. Play the right hand first. Make sure you can hear the melody clearly
  2. Play the left hand slowly. The left hand has its own melody.
  3. Very slowly (count the beats as you play), try to play this piece hands together
  4. Be careful of the Bb’s and the C# in the right hand (2nd last note)
  5. Before playing this piece, try playing the D minor scale
