Key signatures are indicators that state what key the piece is in.
Rather than writing # and b before the notes every single time we use Key Signatures at the beginning of the piece and at the start of every new line of music.
Notice the order: clef, key signature, time signature (If in doubt, go in alphabetical order. Clef, Key, Time)
To work out the key signatures for major keys we use The Circle of Fifths
C major has no sharps or flats, which means there is no key signature.
Count up 5 notes from C (C, D, E, F, G) and you will end up on G
G major will now have 1 sharp (this is the semitone below G which is F#)
