This curved line is called a slur and it indicates that the two notes are to be played smoothly and well connected. The Italian term for this is legato.

To play this accurately, think of the words “drop and roll”

This will ensure that the first note is played heavily and will be held slightly longer before being rolled to the second note which will automatically be lighter allowing the phrasing to naturally occur.

Don’t become confused with the Tie

Notice how the notes are at different pitches (that is, the notes are for different keys).

If there is a curved line that joins two notes of the same pitch, we are to hold the note down.
