To gain ultimate finger strength, speed and dexterity we’re going to look at some of the techniques and exercises used by classical pianists.

In each article we will look at a different touch or expressive technique designed to move you from note-basing to true artistic expression.

Posture: Good posture is something that should be automatic when you’re sitting in front of the piano. This means that:

  1. Sitting in the middle of the piano (eyes level with the music)
  2. Feet flat on the floor
  3. Lean slightly forward
  4. Have forearms parallel to the floor
  5. Wrists must be kept above the keys, hovering on the fingertips (cut long nails)
  6. Keep your fingers slightly curved with your thumbs resting on their side edge

Non Legato Touch

Non legato touch refers to touching piano keys in a way that is not smooth or well connected.

This form of touch is often the most natural response when starting out at the piano, the keys are struck with the finger tips and when the finger tip is drawn back to its original position the key is allowed to return to its full height.

Exercise for Non Legato Touch

Notice how the hands play the same letters one octave apart

Be careful of the fingering. Once you master the first 2 bar pattern you will notice that the hands remain stable and just move up the keyboard one key at a time

This exercise is designed to create a good stable posture, finger strength and independence whilst teaching you how to correctly extend your second and fourth fingers.

Have your thumb and fifth finger beginning on their respective C’s and then extend laterally your second (in the right hand) and fourth (in the left hand) to touch the key E.
