Building Confidence At The Piano

Here’s how to build confidence when you next sit down to play your piano.

  • To begin with aim for consistent practice.
This is hugely important as skills that don’t get used, get lost.
  • Look for songs in your comfort zone
Start at the very beginning with your learning and songs.
Songs that are easy to play will give you the confidence to tackle incrementally harder pieces. There’s no need to jump into super challenging works if there are simplified versions available.
  • Practice the scary bits more
Spend more time on the parts you find challenging by breaking them down into hands separate parts. Tap our rhythms, map out which fingers you’ll need to use (write in finger numbers if you have to) and practice slowly building speed and then blending it with the easier parts to eliminate obvious changes in tempo
  • Don’t forget theory
Understanding the language of music will give you the confidence you need to interpret how music should be played. Similarly, understanding the history of a composer or piece will also guide how you should approach it.
