How To Undo Bad Habits

The only thing worse than picking up a bad habit is trying to undo it.

The most common bad habits include:

  • Not counting rhythm
  • Not reading notes
  • Using bad fingers

To undo a bad habit you will need to be aware that you have a bad habit and be willing to commit to changing it.

A lot of bad habits are picked up by teachers during the lessons and are addressed immediately but this will be more difficult if you are learning remotely, so extra care is needed.

Try to work out how this habit is impacting the sound of the music that you create.

After all, this is all about sound so if you are not counting rhythm accurately, then your piece will sound strange.

Similarly, if you are using awkward fingers then your melodic line is going to be rough and choppy whilst your accompaniment may sound clunky and hard.

Take your time and be patient, write reminders for yourself on the score (USING PENCIL ONLY!!) and if it’s a case of fingering then perhaps try to use coloured tape or post-it notes on the upper section of keys to remind yourself.

Remember to practice slowly and consistently with good habits and as you become more confident you can remove the memory aids.
