Placed above the note head (or below, if the note is under the middle line) it indicates that the note must be played with more force.

To accurately play this, depress the key with more force. Avoid banging on the piano and do not be tempted to lift your finger off the key too suddenly as this will create a staccato effect.

To play this exercise well, ensure that you keep an open hand position and firm finger tips to ensure a crisp, strong accent. Try to maintain even sound throughout both hands.

This piece focuses again on an evenness of tone through both hands by its repeated patterns in both hands. It also combines the use of the legato touch with the accenting to create more melodic shape throughout the piece.
